Using Music to Develop Young Brains

MYC music class

MYC teachers provide the highest quality of music education to young children by blending the pleasure of music making with sound instruction.

The Benefits of Music Education

Musical training helps develop the brain; study after study has shown that and we all want to have smart children. The Montreal Neurological Institute and McGill University studies have shown that children who received keyboard instruction for 15 months showed greater behavioral improvements on finger motor tasks and melody/rhythmic tasks.

The IQs of young students who had nine months of weekly training in piano or voice rose nearly three points more than their untrained peers, according to a 2004 study by E. Glenn Schellenberg of the University of Toronto at Mississauga.

Music students received more academic honors and awards than non-music students. These music students also have more A and B grades compared to non-music students.

More music majors who applied for medical school were admitted compared to those in other majors including English, biology, chemistry and math.

Why Choose Music for Young Children?

All of the above reasons are why every child should experience music lessons at a young age. Keyboard playing and rhythm ensembles nurture team skills. Group piano lessons encourage communication in a positive verbal and nonverbal manner, cooperation with peers, student success, self-control, and acceptance of the consequences of behavior. Group Music for Young Children lessons help students develop the positive attitudes and skills needed for collaboration, leadership and peer acceptance.

Piano playing needs dedication and a good work ethic. The child must train hard to develop skills and fitness, and regular practice instills discipline that can be applied to many areas of life. Playing piano can also help reduce anxiety and stress because it helps the mind refocus.

Students naturally like to play and work together, and it adds excitement to their learning. The most important thing parents can know is that their child will develop in a far more enriched way when they are taking music lessons.
